What Are the Different Types of Water Damage?

The classification system for water damage, as established by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC), has three distinct categories based on the water’s origin and cleanliness level. These are:

Category 1 Water Damage

Category 1 water damage refers to the least harmful form of water damage. This category involves clean water from sources such as broken water supply lines, tub or sink overflows with no contaminants, or appliance malfunctions involving water supply lines. Although this type of water doesn’t pose a substantial threat to human health, it can do exceptional damage to a home and its contents without prompt treatment.

Category 2 Water Damage

Category 2 water damage, also known as gray water, involves water with a significant degree of chemical or physical contaminants such as dish soap or laundry detergent. These elements can cause discomfort or illness following exposure or consumption. Sources of gray water include dishwasher or washing machine overflows, flush from sink drains, or water from a sump pump failure. Professional intervention is necessary to prevent the situation from escalating into a more serious threat.

Category 3 Water Damage

Category 3 water damage, known as black water, is the most severe type. This category involves water contaminated with human waste and potentially toxic organic matter from sources such as sewage, seawater, rising water from rivers or streams, and ground surface water. Category 3 water contains harmful pathogens, toxins, and other dangerous materials, leading to severe health effects if not handled correctly.

At ATI Restoration, our HAZWOPER-trained water damage restoration professionals have the tools, resources, and training necessary to handle and mitigate all categories of water damage, including highly toxic black water. We follow stringent guidelines to ensure the safety of our customers and their properties and work to ensure all water and traces of its damage are eliminated.

The Residential Water Damage Restoration Process

Depending on the source and extent of water damage, the restoration process can vary significantly. Our highly trained and experienced technicians will carefully assess your property to craft a plan that addresses your specific needs.

Each project has unique components. However, the water damage restoration process typically includes:

$

1, Inspecation

A thorough inspection of your property  enabling us to develop the most effective action plan.

$

2, Water Removal Extraction

Standing water must be eliminated before any restoration can begin. Our team uses Portable or vehicle mounted equipment  to remove as much water as possible helping to prevent further damage & any secondary damage to the structure and contents. this also allows a faster drying time and reduces the risk of Microbial Mould growth

$

3, Drying and Dehumidification

Following water extraction, your walls and floors might appear dry. However, a closer inspection using our FLIR Thermal cameras and moisture metre they will likely reveal they are still saturated. We use  dehumidification help prevent the walls and floors from swelling, warping, or breaking down and we also place airmovers and other equipment that may be necessory to help dry the property as fast as possible to help restore your property to a dry standard.
